In Memoriam: Chuck McCabe - August 24, 1944 - July 23, 2010

Chuck at Sisters' Folk Festival

Chuck McCabe passed away peacefully on the evening of Friday, July 23, 2010 in Santa Clara, California. He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier in the year, and chose to walk through the final stage of his life privately with his wife Cindy, close friends, and Blah Blah Woof Woof musical cohorts at his side. The aggressive nature of this disease made his last days blessedly swift. The outpouring of love from Chuck’s fans and the greater folk community around the world has buoyed his family and friends during this time and they are deeply grateful.

Chucks Passing

Wow!! Kudo's to Chuck. The first musician to ever put me on stage with the Boomers way back in "86"...

I will always remember you Chuck. You were a killer Musician with an appetite for Good Times and Good Music.

You will be missed...

See you on the Other Side!

Chuck McCabe

I was on the board of directors of the Sisters Folk Festival in it's early days. I met Chuck there as I was, inaddition to other duties, Stage Manager. I had met Chuck only briefly prior to introdicing him on stage. The I sat back and marveled as his competence on the guitar, his imaginative songs and lyrics, and his genuinly friendly nature. In the evening we jammed a bit together, I participated in his workshops, and we became friends. I only learned of his death this week, and was surprised. We lose so many friends too soon. In Chuck's case...way too soon.

I played his CDs in the car today while my wife drove. She had met Chuck, but didn't realise he was so versitile and prolofic. She loves "I Like Your Skin"

RIP, Chuck, you done good.

I am so sorry to hear of

I am so sorry to hear of Chuck McCabe's death. His singing and songwriting touched many hearts in ways he may never know.

Honoring Chuck's Birthday---

It is still hard to believe it has been a year since Chuck's passing.
Honoring his B'Day with music and a toast to my friend and colleague!

Thanks for the memories and the music

I first met Chuck at the Boston Folk Festival in 2005 where we were both finalists for best song. We shared the distinction of having previously won the Woody Guthrie Songwriting Award, myself in 2000 and Chuck a year or two later. He was a wonderful guy and truly talented. I very much enjoyed our time together in the Green Room at the Boston Folk Festival. A big smile, some big laughs, and a huge talent. My condolences to his loved ones. He leaves a big empty space. Fortunately, we have his music--which I will always cherish.

best regards

It is so sad when good and talented people leave this world. Still, it's life, the time has come and nothing can be done about it. The only thing that remains for us is to remember them. I'm a great fan of Chuck McCabe's songs. They always trigger the best emotions in my soul. They and their author will never be forgotten.

I miss that guy . . .

I was just getting to know Chuck when I moved away, first to Nevada, and then to San Diego. Caught him and Steve Kritzer on a plane to SD once, and rekindled some great friendships. Yeah, I miss that guy.

thanks

I met Chuck four years ago about the time Jerry and I started dating. A very short time compared to most of his friends. And indeed he was a friend. At the time Cindy was very ill and hospitalized. As time passed and I witnessed his love and care for Cindy, I knew this was a special soul.

Listening to his lyrical music and viewing life through this perspective gave me a deep appreciation of the man, Charles Henry McCabe. It has been an honor to know you Charles. Loving you always, T professional wordpress themes

I was so sorry to hear of

I was so sorry to hear of Chuck's passing. He was a gifted guitarist and songwriter.
Chuck and i shared two things in common. In 2000 I won the Woody Guthrie competition and in 2001 Chuck won it. I love his song "Minimum Wager." Also in 2005 Chuck and I were finalists for Best Song at the Boston Folk Festival. Neither of us won; but I thought that my song and Chuck's song were the 2 best out of the five finalists. And I told him that on that night. Not only was he a gifted writer, but, more importantly, he was a nice guy.
To Cindy and his family, I am truly sorry for your loss. To humanity as well, I mourn his passing--he gave us a true voice and a unique perspective on life. I am happy to have known him. He enriched my life.

Missing Chuck

On Sunday, June 12, 2011, I was stunned to hear that Chuck McCabe had passed away almost a year ago. Obviously, Chuck and I weren't real close, or I would have known sooner that he had died. But it was still a bomb to find out. We knew one another from when he had performed at Lupin Lodge, where his song "I like your skin" was a big hit. He always had a friendly "Hi, Rich" every time I saw him. That's just part of who he was not an arrogant superstar but a genuinely friendly human being.

So we live with constant reminders that life is temporary, and we need to fill each day with as much love as we can. Thank you, Chuck, for that lesson, but I sure wish there was a less painful way to learn it.

Chuck

A truly inspirational teacher of songwriting. I always felt that he was a mentor and cared about how I developed. The subtle and powerful elements of his songwriting always impressed me, and he seemed to do it with such ease. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.

Chuck, You Were a Good Friend

When we first learned of Chuck's diagnosis and decision not to allow many in during his final days, we were very saddened. Because we loved him and his work so much, we repsected that and only recently did we learn that we had lost our dear friend.

We always enjoyed an opportunity to attend one of his shows on the Peninsula and particularly enjoyed "Fred", "I Miss My Mustache" and "I Love Your Skin." He always had a wide smile, a hug for us, and great conversation. Our hearts go out to Chuck's family and friends. He was indeed a very special man.

Good Times, Good Songs and Good Friends

As entertainment director at Lupin Naturist Club I had the good fortune to book Chuck and Chuck and the Boomers to several entertainments at the Club. Steve Kritzer was another frequent entertainer as was all of Blah Blah Woof Woof. I saw Chuck on night at a venue as I was wearing my Santa costume. He had another gig that night and asked me to accompany him. Great fun and lots of dancing partners were had that night of him and his band of magical music makers. I called Cindy my girlfriend and would ask about her constantly. I moved to Lake County and was able to have Chuck come and play music in two venues here. It was my intention to invite Chuck and his friends here for a Songwriters Festival - we recently renovated an old movie theater into a performing arts venue. I play Chuck's CDs on my bi-monthly radio show on KPFZ in Lakeport. I am so saddened by his passing but know that we will meet again and I will still be entertained and considered a friend. One of his songs "I Love Your Skin" was inspired by his Lupin visits. My love to Cindy.

Thank you, Chuck!

I just now found out about Chuck's death, nearly a year after his passing, and I'm so saddened to learn of this. I only met him once, when we shared a bill at Emeryville's "Strings" and we hit if off immediately. He gave me a copy of his very funny book to read and I remember complimenting him not only on his music and guitar playing but also on his gorgeous guitar. Only a few weeks later I got an email from Chuck, saying he had an endorsement deal with Breedlove Guitars and that through him I could buy a Breedlove guitar at half price. The wonderful guitar I ordered is still my main stage guitar and it will mean even more to me now. You were a delightful person, Chuck. I thank you for all you gave this world while you were on it.

Condolences

I just heard about the loss of this great man. I wanted to say a Thank you for his "I'd rather be in Redding" song.
He was a true artist and will be greatly missed.

My parents always took us as

My parents always took us as children to see Chuck sing...back in the Bob and Jenny days. We were so fortunate to see Chuck play on May 12, 2010 when he played at the Ugly Mug. My mom Judy, who now has Parkinson's spoke of him, and on a whim I googled Chuck...ironic that my brothers, my husband, and I were able to take her to see him that day in May....My dad died 8 years ago, May 12 being his birthday. Chuck and the wonderful memories of their younger years brought tears to us all when Chuck hugged my mom that day and remembered my parents after probably 20 years of distance from one another. We SO enjoyed Chuck's incredible talent, sense of humor and warm heartedness. We will listen to his tunes with a special part of our hearts.

Chuck - a dear friend

Hi, I remember the days of Slippery Rock String Band with great fondness - all the times that we spent promoting this great little band, there was Chuck, Lea, Michael and Bob. And through the years I was able to keep up my friendship with this great guy even though I now live in the UK.

Thanks for the good times,

Charles & Chris

Chuck's Christmas songs

Chuck's song will most assuredly be played on our Christmas Music Shows!

I met Chuck at the Woodshed

I met Chuck at the Woodshed in Brewster on Cape Cod in 1975. He was the featured entertainer prior to me and my partner Pete Buscemi's arrival during that summer. Pete and I played five nights a week for the next five years and during that time period Chuck would perform occasional gigs as a solo and with his trio, Major Hoople and the Rhythm Commandos. I sat in with him on occasion as he did with us I believe, although my recollections of those years are kinda hazy for obvious reasons. Over the years Chuck and I managed to stay in touch as our love of the Woodshed years and our music were the glue. When I moved to LA in the mid-eighties, we once again connected as he was living in the Bay area. Sadly, I never made it north to visit him. So, many years later we found each other again on Facebook and I spoke to him just a couple of weeks before his passing. He never said a word during our conversations about being sick, so I was blind sided by the news which I received via FB.

What I remember most about Chuck, beside being a fine musician, entertainer and songwriter, was his
great sense of humor and laid back demeanor. He genuinely loved people and I don't think you could find too many folks walking the planet with a bigger heart than Chuck's. At this time in our lives when friends and acquaintances begin to leave us behind, we are often left only with remembrances of time spent together. For me, Chuck has left something more. Through his music and his interaction with people on and off the stage, Chuck shared with us "joie de vivre", his joy of life. So on Chuck's behalf, may we all smile more and open our hearts wider to others.

Thanks Chuck for those many moments, you are loved and missed by us all.

Thanks

Thank you very good Site. I like this site.. I just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed the show very much.

Regards,

I read this to our friends at the memorial gathering

Shit. You and John Hartford. John left when it was my turn to buy dinner; you left before you collected your birthday present of a free steel guitar track on one of your songs. Hey, and Garcia and Pig Pen for that matter. You all left before we could play more music together. I’m selfishly pissed.

So, dear friend, how will I know you when I see you next?
Will you be the kid in the audience dancing with joy as I sing one of your songs? Or will you be that older kid in my school who holds me in awe with his talent—the guy I want to be just like when I get older?

Chuck, and gathered friends, I know we have been blessed to grow up in the same insanely creative region and I fondly hope we can do it again--and again—and again.

Loving you always,

This weekend we, my husband, Jerry and I will be in Los Gatos in celebration of Chuck's life. It won't be easy. Jerry and Chuck celebrated their birthdays together for thirty years; their birth-dates being one year and one day apart.

I met Chuck four years ago about the time Jerry and I started dating. A very short time compared to most of his friends. And indeed he was a friend. At the time Cindy was very ill and hospitalized. As time passed and I witnessed his love and care for Cindy, I knew this was a special soul.

I Miss You Uncle Chuck

I really miss you uncle Chuck and wish I could have seen you one last time...

Love, your nephew, Tyler

Chuckles, we'll miss you

Sandy and I ran into Bob Clark the other night, the former owner of the Los Altos Bar and Grill, where we first met Chuck and The Boomers the night of their audition. He told us Chuckles (Sandy's name for him because of his wit and humor) had passed and we were totally stunned.
There was many a night there when the band would sit with us during a break telling stories, sometimes some not too clean jokes, and answering our curiosity about their careers. Chuck used that line with us about how he had managed to successfully evade fame and fortune. What a kind, caring and fun man he was as was the whole group. I used to get regular e-mails from Woodshed and it was from one of those he informed me about Joe's passing. Another tragedy for the music community, family and friends. We went to several of Chuck's solo gigs and other band incarnations but in recent years lost touch with him. Our loss to be sure.
We were fortunate to hire The Boomers to play at our wedding and everyone loved them. How could you not?
We will always treasure the memories of all those moments we spent with Chuck and the reminders of him we have at home - the book, the CD's, shirt, hat, etc
Our condolences to you,Cindy, and all his family and friends. Heaven has added some new tunes to its repertoire and the perfect musician to play them
